The INSIDER Summary:

  • “Bachelor” season 20 star Ben Higgins is now broken up with his winner, Lauren Bushnell.
  • The pair were engaged for over a year.
  • They still have to return the ring to ABC.
  • It was reportedly worth almost $100,000.

On Monday, People magazine was first to report that Season 20 star of “The Bachelor” Ben Higgins and his winner Lauren Bushnell have broken up.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to go our separate ways,” they told People in a statement. “We feel fortunate for the time we had together, and will remain friends with much love and respect for one another.”

While some fans of the show may have been surprised by the breakup, others immediately started asking the important questions, like what will happen to Bushnell’s whopping 4.25-carat engagement ring?

The engagement rings on “The Bachelor” is something the show doesn’t take lightly. The rings — from none other than celebrity jeweler and friend of “The Bachelor” Neil Lane, of course — have only gotten bigger and more extravagant as the years have waned on. Worth almost $100,000, Bushnell’s ring was one of the most expensive in “Bachelor” history, according to E! Online. The custom ring was art deco style, and covered in tiny diamonds along its sides.

But that’s nothing compared to the ring that Shawn Booth, the winner of “The Bachelorette” season 11, picked out for Kaitlyn Bristowe — a 3.5-carat center stone with a diamond-encrusted, twisted band that was reportedly valued at $150,000.

Other expensive rings on the series have ranged from $50,000 to $100,000, all with over three-carat center stones. Expert jeweler Lane does not take bling lightly.

So what happens to these beautiful rings when some of these stars eventually end their relationships? It’s one of the things ABC doesn’t want you to know about filming “The Bachelor,” but considering that this has all gone down before, we know what to expect.

If contestants get engaged, but break up before two years of being together, they must give back the Neil Lane diamond ring. A source told E! News that the ring is given back to the producers of the show before being delivered back to Lane.

When season 5 “Bachelorette” Jillian Harris broke up with her winner Ed Swiderski, she was forced to give up her ring, according to Radar Online, which also reports that couples are prohibited from selling the ring until two years after the show. Even then, they must give ABC written notice if they do.

Considering that Bushnell and Higgins were engaged for almost a year and a half — Higgins got down on one knee when “The Bachelor” finished filming in the fall of 2015 — it looks like they’ll have to send the ring back.
