- He claims they unscrewed the screws in his van’s tires, which led to a traffic accident.
YouTube star Jake Paul’s neighbors are debating whether to file a class-action public nuisance lawsuit against him. Now, he’s accusing one of them of attempted murder.
Paul, who is 20 years old, lives in a West Hollywood rental property where he produces viral videos with rap songs and audacious stunts. They’ve gotten him around 25 million followers across different social media channels, including YouTube and Instagram. They’ve also gotten him numerous complaints from his neighbors, who say he’s turned the neighborhood from a quiet, residential area into a “war zone” and a “circus.”
Now Paul says, without providing evidence, that his neighbors are conspiring to kill him. In his latest vlog, he says one of them tinkered with his truck so that it would fall apart when he was driving. The vlog is titled “My wife is leaving me …” (Paul is unmarried) and he addresses the subject around three minutes into the video.
“One of the neighbors comes over and unscrews the screws in the tire to our Team 10 [YouTuber group] van,” Paul said. “The neighbors try to kill us, bro.”
The van was seen pulled over on the side of a highway on Wednesday night and taken away on a tow truck. Paul said that happened while two of his YouTube colleagues were driving it.
“Max and the Martinez twins are driving down the road on the highway. All of a sudden, they hear a noise,” Paul said. “They go outside. The nuts are off of the tire. So they start driving slow on the highway.”
Paul suggested that the missing nuts nearly caused a major traffic accident.
“Literally the whole entire tire falls off. And the bus [goes lopsided],” Paul said. “They go flying into the middle of the traffic on the 101. The whole highway stops. Super dangerous situation. And the neighbors are the ones that did this. […] That’s criminal. That’s an actual criminal activity.”
Paul’s accusation comes as his neighbors are reportedly considering whether to file a class-action public nuisance lawsuit against Paul and his homeowner, according to Mic. Neighbors are planning to hold a meeting with city leaders, police, and code enforcement officials.
Neither Paul nor several of his neighbors responded immediately to INSIDER’s request for comment.
KTLA, a local news station, interviewed Paul on Monday. Paul said that “people like circuses.”
“It’s terrible, it’s a bad situation and I feel bad for them, but there’s nothing we can do,” Paul said. “Jake Paulers are the strongest army out there.”
The interview galvanized a round of negative press for the influencer. “We Found Him, The Worst Person On Earth,” reads a headline on Deadspin. “Why YouTuber and former Vine star Jake Paul is a moronic menace to society,” reads one on the National Post website. And The Daily Mail published a rumor that Paul has been arrested, though many commenters think it’s a prank. The Los Angeles police department did not immediately respond to INSIDER’s request for comment.
In his vlog, Paul acknowledged that his neighbors were weighing whether or not to sue him. He said he doesn’t know why anything he does would be illegal, “because we do everything on our own property.” Paul also suggested he may use the incident with his van to counter sue.
“What do we do?” Paul said. “We just make videos for kids on the internet. Who’s the bad guy here?”
